Rob Liefeld's impact on the comic book industry is pretty hard to quantify without understanding the landscape of the '90s, but his most lasting achievement is the creation of Deadpool back in 1991.
The character first appeared in The New Mutants #98 and has since become one of Marvel's top characters, appearing in countless comic books, video games and even his own movie in 2016. However, for most of that success, the man behind the Merc with a Mouth has been surprisingly absent, with new writers and artists tackling Deadpool's recent adventures.
That's about to change now, though, as ComicBook.com has revealed that Liefeld is back in the Deadpool saddle on the new original graphic novel (OGN), Deadpool: Bad Blood. Here, Liefeld is back on art, with Chris Sims and Chad Bowers co-writing the script based on Liefeld's story.
The OGN format allows the team to tell a single unbroken story that's not tied to larger events or other books.
"The idea that you can tell one consecutive story uninterrupted is unique nowadays," Liefeld told ComicBook. "No single issue breaks and cliff hangers allow for greater momentum building the tale. The format has tremendous storytelling opportunities. I'm having a blast as are Chad and Chris."
Outside of a new villain called Thumper and the appearance of other Liefeld creations like Domino and Cable, the plot is still pretty under wraps. All Liefeld was willing to say was:
"This is literally a story I've wanted to share for the last 20 years. I actually started drawing pages of it out in my notebook back around 2007, it's something I do when I get ideas, artistically riffing, so the idea that I'm actually seeing the story and the pages come to life is a thrill! I don't want to give anything away, I'm just trying to add something memorable to the canon."
There is no release date for Deadpool: Bad Blood, but you can probably expect it around the same time the movie drops in February 2016.
