Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 may not be out in theaters until May 2017, but that isn't stopping the Internet rumor mill from running wild thanks to recent comments made by Rocket Raccoon voice actor Bradley Cooper.
During an interview promoting his new film Burnt, Cooper gave an interesting response when asked who the main villain of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 would be.
"But Josh Brolin's the villain, right?" Cooper responds. "Or he's the main villain, no? He was in the first one. He played what's his name's dad."
Director James Gunn, who is returning for the sequel, has previously said the second film will feature the father of Chris Pratt's Star-Lord character. Unlike the comics where Star-Lord's dad is the ruler of the Spartax Empire, Gunn has said that Star-Lord's father in the movie will be a different character.
Cooper's comments seem to imply that Thanos is Star-Lord's father, but that doesn't seem to make much sense considering there are already multiple characters who call Thanos dad, fellow Guardian Gamora among them. It sounds like Cooper may have simply gotten confused, and recent comments from Gunn seem to indicate this is indeed the case.
Taking to Twitter, Gunn says Cooper has just received the script and hadn't read it at the time of the interview. It was therefore impossible for him to spoil any major plot point.
Many fans have assumed that Thanos would be the main villain of the film. After all, multiple Marvel films have been building toward the character assembling the all-powerful Infinity Gauntlet and attempting to take over the galaxy. The idea of the character being the father of Star-Lord, however, certainly comes out of left field. In that case, it's nice to see Gunn put these rumors to rest.
