Comcast has rolled out unlimited data for customers who are willing to pay an additional $35 on top of their Internet plans.
Without the add-on, customers who go past the 300 GB monthly data cap get charged an additional $10 for every 50 GB block. Comcast came to the conclusion that residents in Atlanta, Miami and Nashville have plenty of heavy data users, and it is bringing this unlimited data plan to the table there as a solution.
"[I]f you enroll in the Unlimited Data Option and use 530 GB in a given month, you will only be charged a fee of $30-$35 (depending on area) for choosing to enroll in the Unlimited Data Option," Comcast says on its support page.
As more online streaming services keep popping up lately, this unlimited data option is quickly becoming more or less necessary, encouraging Comcast subscribers to sign up for the deal. The downside here is that users will have to make sure to use up more than 300 GB worth of bandwidth to get the most out of their Internet plans.
Similar data options might launch in other cities as well, and depending on the area, they will cost between $30 and $40.
Comcast says that it did its homework before implementing the unlimited data option in Atlanta, Miami and Nashville, claiming that 60 percent of the residents there were willing to sign up. Atlanta is the first to get the $35 add-on.
"When Comcast surveyed these folks, it found that 60 percent were willing to pay a flat $30 to $40 a month extra to be freed from overage payments," the Washington Post reports as Comcast's statement.
What all this entails is that Comcast subscribers in Atlanta will get unlimited data for a $35 addition and that Comcast stands to generate a considerable amount of extra cash for the company, as 100,000 subscribers could add up to $3.5 million dollars on a monthly basis.
