OnePlus apparently planned to launch a fitness tracker and a Bluetooth speaker as well, but the company dropped plans for the wearable gadgets at the last minute.
Wearable technology is on the rise and is constantly gaining momentum, with an increasing number of smartwatches, fitness trackers and other such gadgets making their way to the market. A number of companies have already entered the ring and more are expected to join the party soon, but OnePlus has decided that it's not the time.
Just a couple of days ago, OnePlus grabbed the spotlight with its latest smartphone, unveiling the OnePlus X. Unlike the OnePlus 2, which was also unveiled recently, the OnePlus X comes as a mid-range device with a premium look but average specs otherwise.
It now seems that a OnePlus fitness tracker and a Bluetooth speaker should've made their debut recently as well, but the company decided last-minute to drop the wearables and focus on smartphones instead.
More specifically, OnePlus reportedly pulled the plug on these gadgets just one month before they were supposed to hit the market.
"We asked ourselves, what is the goal? We decided we needed to focus on smartphones, to ensure we're launching quality products and leave the wearables and speakers to the people who know what they're doing," OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei explained in an interview.
Pei further notes that OnePlus aims to focus its efforts on its flagship phone and the recent OnePlus X and at least for the foreseeable future, it has no plans to unveil more devices at various price points.
The company also plans to focus on its OxygenOS software and its customer service in the years to come, aiming to improve on all fronts.
In other words, OnePlus came to the conclusion that it would be better to have fewer products and focus on them rather than have a larger portfolio it can't handle at the moment. Larger companies such as Samsung may afford to flood the market with a slew of different devices in all categories and price points, but OnePlus doesn't have the same resources or vision. For this reason, OnePlus decided to nix the Bluetooth speaker and the fitness tracker it planned to launch.
