Google 'Who's Down' App Won't Keep You Waiting On Text Messages To Learn Who Can Hang Out

How many times have you sent out a group text message, surveying your friends to see who wants to hang out, only to get a delayed response or no response at all?

Well, Google's new app, Who's Down, aims to change all that. The invite-only app, which just hit the Google Play store, allows users to instantly find out which of their friends are available to hang out.

The way it works is with one slide on the app, and you let your circle of friends know that you're down to hang out. Once confirming that you're free, you can add a status message to let your friends know what you're down to do — whether it's hitting the bar for a couple of drinks, grabbing some grub or going to the movies. Then, your friends who are also down to hang out, can agree to take you up on your suggestion or include you in whatever plans they might have made before.

While this app could draw comparisons to Apple's Find My Friends app or Foursquare's Swarm app, it's unclear how Who's Down matches friends. Engadget's stab at that is saying it's possibly via your Google contacts or people you chat with on Hangouts.

If your circle of friends is pretty responsive via group text, you probably won't need this app. However, the fact that Who's Down first gauges who's free to hang out means not wasting time with those who aren't available.

In addition to being available for Android-powered smartphones, the Who's Down is also available for iOS.
