Halo 5: Guardians is a fantastic game. Not only did it bring the feel of classic Halo back to the franchise, but it managed to push the gameplay in several clever, fun new directions. For Halo fans, it's a return to form: Halo 4 wasn't a terrible game by any means, but it certainly wasn't what franchise veterans were expecting.
If there's any one piece of Halo 5: Guardians that doesn't quite live up to fan expectations, it's the single-player story. Hunting down the Master Chief was a huge part of the game's marketing campaign, but that never really pans out during the story - add in a somewhat disappointing finale, and you've got the weakest part of the overall package. It's still fun...it just doesn't quite live up to everything else Halo 5 has to offer.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Halo 5: Guardians' story will be changing anytime soon: in an interview with Redbull, 343 Industries creative director Josh Holmes confirmed that, while the studio is committed to supporting the multiplayer modes, there's nothing in the works for the story side of things.
"While we're always looking for new ways to expand the Halo universe, we do not currently have any plans to release future campaign content for Halo 5: Guardians."
It's sad news, but it's not all that surprising, either: aside from Bungie's Halo 3: ODST, the series has always shied away from story-based expansions. Not only that, but putting together a single-player campaign requires a ton of resources just to get it off the ground - in a lot of ways, it makes more sense for 343 Industries to simply start working on the next game instead.
Then again, the news is still somewhat surprising to hear: 343 announced that all of Halo 5: Guardians' multiplayer maps will be available for free. That's great news for gamers, but it begs the question: if the studio isn't charging fans for updated multiplayer, what sort of paid DLC will Halo 5 receive?
Until 343 Industries announces something concrete, there's really no telling what Halo 5: Guardians' first paid expansion will look like. At the very least, fans can look forward to the game's first free multiplayer update later this year.
