Yoshi Is Unstoppable – Tops List of Over 20 Million Amiibos Shipped Worlwide

Amiibos have been fairly popular since its release for multiple Nintendo platforms in 2014 but as to just how popular it is, you probably didn't imagine. Nintendo has just revealed in a shareholder's meeting that Amiibo sales have reached 21.1 million and, what's more, Yoshi is dominating the sales with 400,000 units sold.

That's right, 400,000 Yoshis are jumping around the world, but it's not just any Yoshi, the best-seller is the Yarn Yoshi Amiibo from Yoshi's Wooly World which just had its launch on Jun. 26 in Europe, Jul. 16 in Japan and Oct.16 in North America.

In addition, Nintendo revealed that of the total Amiibo sales, only 11 percent were sold in Japan with the 20 percent being Europe sales and a whopping 66 percent are sales in North America.

"In 2014, we launched amiibo to create a new "connection" with the goal of spreading smiles. Before, these characters never left the world of video games, but now they have launched into the real world," Nintendo wrote about its Amiibos.

Just what are Amiibos anyway, other than cute? Amiibos are physical figurines of game characters that connect to the games themselves. It can read and write game-specific data when tapped on the console's Near Field Communication (NFC) port to give the player new characters, special items, customize or level-up their existing characters, unlock new stages and adventures to the game. Basically, it adds excitement and lets players play with the characters even when the console is turned off because it is a physical item.

Amiibos also come in different shapes and sizes. While many are small figurines, there are also portable Amiibo cards and, coming in November, a Mega Yarn Yoshi. It works in various compatible Nintendo platforms such as the Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL.
