'Exodus: Gods and Kings' drops its first trailer

Ridley Scott's latest film, "Exodus: Gods and Kings" has just dropped its first trailer and it looks to be another epic production from the man behind "Blade Runner." The sweeping tale of Moses and Rhamses and the exodus of the Jews from Egypt looks to get in on the early holiday box office with a December 12 release date. The film no doubt will require a lot of ticket sales to make back its lofty production budget, but Scott's movies always tend to make money.

The trailer is short by today's standards, but it still manages to pack a punch. The film stars Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Rhamses, and it follows the story of the Ten Plagues and the resulting exodus of the Jews from Egypt.

While films like "The Ten Commandments" are still relevant today, "Exodus: Gods and Kings" looks to take a more detailed and CGI-friendly approach to the world of ancient Egypt. Even though Bale, Edgerton and the supporting cast do not look very Egyptian, this looks to be more of a 21st century update of the classic tale.

The production design and costumes of the film translates well in the trailer and it definitely has that Ridley Scott epic feel to it. The plagues that are shown in the sneak peek look to be top notch and should give audiences a real sense of dread.

While biblical epics like "Noah" have not done crazy box office, "Exodus: Gods and Kings" looks to make a dent in the massive holiday box office. A built-in audience will surely help the film get the attention of the droves of moviegoers come December.

The stand out of the trailer is most definitely the special effects and the look of the film. Ridley Scott is no stranger to big productions, but this film will be a huge test to see if audiences can suspend their disbelief at the door.

If the film leaves the gate with a solid opening and can maintain a healthy box office, it may be a hit like "Gladiator" from back in 2000. Of course, Ridley Scott also directed the flop "Kingdom of Heaven" so it is most definitely a gamble. Still, the director is a big budget auteur, and after you watch the trailer, you realize the scope of the film is tailor-made for the holiday box office.
