Most iPad game controllers probably look something like a console controller that connects through Bluetooth and allows users to play games on their iPad as if they were using a PlayStation or Xbox.
A new controller, however, takes a more active approach to an iPad controller, allowing users to stand on two large pieces of wood to play games like Swing Pong, which is similar to the popular ping-pong game.
The device is called Swingy and it's currently live on Kickstarter. It has a place for users to place their feet, along with a curved bottom. According to the Kickstarter page, this helps strengthen the user's core muscles and promotes good posture, which is certainly more than can be said for sitting on the couch all day to play games.
A small sensor is found underneath each footrest and pairs to the iPad or Android tablet through Bluetooth LE. In the case of Swing Pong, users move their feet back and forth to control two barriers on the tablet's screen, ensuring that a ball doesn't make it to the edge of the screen. It's meant for users age 4 and older.
The pieces of wood feature a larger bottom than top, ensuring that users aren't going to fall over. They can also support up to 300 pounds.
The main point of the "wireless balance board" is to encourage kids to remain active, improving their balance and coordination and helping children with their athleticism. It also blurs the line between playtime and being active, with the current generation likely more interested in planting themselves in front of a gaming console during their free time.
The device can come in a range of different designs, and there's a range of incentives available through the Kickstarter page. Those who want to purchase Swingy for themselves will need to pledge $88. Users who pledge $2,222 can get a trip to Slovenia to create their own Swingy's. The campaign so far has raised $5,525 of its $20,000 goal and has 29 days left.
