AIG, one of the largest insurance companies in the world, has announced a new insurance product aimed at those who own and operate drones. The policy will protect operators from financial loss associated with their drone being damaged or in the case of people bring injured or property being damaged during the operation of the drone.
Of course, this is not for if you use a drone on the weekends to film your backyard BBQ. Instead, the product is more aimed at professional videographers that use and operate drones worth thousands of dollars.
In fact, AIG will go beyond insuring the drone itself, but will also operate equipment being carried by the drone. This will be especially helpful for the videographers we talked about, who likely have thousands of dollars worth of video equipment mounted on their already-expensive drone.
It's not known exactly how much the insurance policy will cost, however, considering the fact that drones are still in their early stages and often experience accidents, it's likely to be pretty expensive.
AIG is also looking toward the future, with the company expecting a day where commercial drones are legal everywhere. It is expected that, by 2025, businesses in the U.S. will buy as many as 160,000 drones per year, according to the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems. This number of drones will be a big deal for insurance companies going forward.
