They're back! Everybody's favorite partying BFFs, Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone of Absolutely Fabulous are returning, this time on the big screen, and they're still struggling with the latest technology trends, if reports revealing the film's opening sequence are correct.
Absolutely Fabulous is one of the UK's most iconic and best-loved sitcoms of all time, ranking as the 17th greatest British TV show of all time by the British Film Institute, and remains a huge U.S. cult hit due to its numerous airings on various cable channels, including Comedy Central, BBC America and Logo.
It is now almost 25 years since the show first debuted in 1992, following the self-obsessed and desperate middle-aged best friends as they hopelessly try to remain hip and trendy in a world that seems to be passing them by. Filming has just begun on their eagerly-anticipated first big screen movie, and it looks like everyone's back to their old tricks.
Reports indicate that the opening scene revolves around the two aging besties waking up on an abandoned yacht in the South of France, horrified to discover their smartphones won't function. Struggles with technology have been at the forefront of the duo's comedy exploits since its introduction. Back then, it was faxes, which Edina's hopelessly airheaded assistant Bubbles, played by Jane Horracks, who will return in the movie, described as "paper coming out of the answering machine."
As the technology craze grew, so did the number of plotlines revolving around Patsy and Eddie's struggles to adapt to the latest devices. In the 2001 series, Patsy, who famously found all sorts of excuses not to show up personally at the offices of her fashion PR firm, attempted to set up a webcam to teleconference with her employees. Other episodes have featured the ensuing hijinx when the ladies bumbled through their attempted usage of an electric scooter, an isolation tank, a panic room keypad and Edina's high-tech kitchen items.
While her alter ego Edina has always had trouble embracing the latest tech trends while trying to stay relevant, the same cannot be said for series creator Jennifer Saunders, who penned every episode, along with the new film's script. Saunders, along with costar Joanna Lumley, both have active Twitter accounts.
