October's Free Xbox Live Games With Gold Pack An Emotional Punch

Another month, another batch of free games for Xbox Live Gold subscribers — but October's titles won't be easily forgotten.

That's because next month's free games are some of the most heart-wrenching, emotionally draining games that have released in recent memory. First up is Telltale's The Walking Dead Season 1, which will be free for both Xbox One and Xbox 360 users. The title won multiple "Game of the Year" awards for its powerful storytelling, in which players take on the role of Lee Everett in a struggle to escape a zombie-infested Georgia.

Xbox One owners will be getting the "The Complete First Season" edition, which includes the bonus storyline 400 Days. No matter which console you are playing on, make sure you have some tissues nearby.

Same goes for Valiant Hearts: The Great War, the other free title coming to Xbox One owners. Ubisoft's gorgeous sidescroller explores World War I through the eyes of multiple characters on all sides of the conflict, resulting in a narrative filled with triumph and tragedy. Valiant Hearts will be free to download all October long.

Last but not least, Xbox 360 players can download Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes free of charge. This prequel tale to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain caught a lot of flak for having a steep price tag for little content — but it's hard to complain when it comes at no cost. It just might convince you to check out the full version of Metal Gear Solid V, which is likely Microsoft's intention in making the standalone prequel free on 360 as well as on Xbox One last month.

Players can download The Walking Dead on Xbox One from October 16 to November 15. Xbox 360 owners can download the Walking Dead from October 16 through October 31. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be free on Xbox 360 from October 1 through October 15.
