Waterfalls, Fountains & More Have Frozen Across New York

Lest Boston think it's cornered the market on crazy winter weather, New York begs to differ. Thanks to temperatures dipping below 0° at night and never rising above freezing during the day, the entire state is starting to look like Roland Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow. You know, the one where New York froze and Jake Gyllenhaal ran a lot.

Okay, so Boston probably has it the worst of anyone in the U.S. just now. No argument there. But New York has some pretty amazing bodies of water that have turned to ice in spectacular ways. Feast your eyes on these incredible ice formations, found across New York state.

You've probably heard that Niagara Falls has frozen over. This is true, but also kind of false. A good-sized portion of Niagara Falls has frozen, but far from all of it. Still, what has frozen looks pretty eye-popping.

Down in the Big Apple itself, here's the famous fountain in New York City's Bryant Park. It's become a very popular spot for selfies over the last week.

Speaking of fountains, check out this stunning, high-spewing fountain from Letchworth State Park in western New York. (You may see this picture or ones like it online that label this thing as a "geyser." Don't believe it.)

Here's a view of New York City's frozen East River, with the Brooklyn Bridge stretching across. It looks just like that scene in The Dark Knight Rises, where Commissioner Gordon has to walk across the ice...

Lake Champlain, which upstate New York shares with Vermont, has completely frozen over. Like, hardcore.

Lastly... Well, honestly, I have no idea what we're looking at here. But it's a pretty awesome sight nonetheless. It's from somewhere along the Genesee River in western New York.
