Recent innovations now enable glasses to also serve as assistive technology for individuals with disabilities other than vision impairment. This is best exemplified by the Nuance audio glasses, which are designed to seamlessly incorporate hearing aids into smart eyewear to combine vision and hearing solutions. The hearing glasses are equipped with next-generation audio engineering to enable individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss to cut through background noise and listen to conversations in real-time.

In addition to detecting eye movements for human-machine interactions, smart contact lenses are also being developed for more advanced healthcare applications, starting with the diagnosis of eye conditions. The Glaucoma Research Foundation reports how researchers from Sun Yat-Sen University integrated biosensors into contact lenses to measure intraocular pressure (IOP). Since IOP is the primary indicator of glaucoma, one of the leading causes of vision loss, these smart contacts can help detect and monitor real-time changes in the IOP for early disease detection.

Interestingly, the same technology can also be utilized for glaucoma treatment. Since these lenses' sensing plates are surrounded by thin films that respond to IOP changes, they can be programmed to deliver an electrical signal that triggers the lenses to release anti-glaucoma medication. However, another way sunglasses can improve visual clarity and sharpness is through adaptive lenses that seamlessly adapt to varying light conditions.
