There is an upcoming Model Y Long Range version, but the news is that the Standard Range and rear-wheel drive Model Y, which has been available for some time now, has a secret: an unlockable additional range.

However, while these additional improvements to the electric vehicle are lying dormant, Tesla plans to make them available to users who pay as much as $2,000 for this expanded range.

Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk revealed that the Tesla Model Y has a secret, particularly for the 260-mile range variant, a.k.a. the Standard Range RWD models.

This is because it has an unlockable additional range that lies dormant within its batteries, unknown to many.

Users may not have known it, but Tesla knew full well that the Standard Range RWD Model Y has more juice to give users apart from the advertised 260 miles.

For an additional purchase of $1,500 up to $2,000, Musk said that users may get an additional range of 40 to 60 miles when opting for the upgrade.

The range and the price would depend on the type of battery a user's Model Y has in store, and it was not clarified by Musk or Tesla to which specific battery cells the said additional pricing applies.

Model Y Additional Range: Pending Approval

For now, the additional range for the 260-mile Model Y is still pending regulatory approval, meaning that this is not yet available to be offered and purchased by owners eligible to get it.

It also comes amidst the recent discontinuation of the Standard Range RWD 260-mile Model Y variant as Tesla replaced it with a new Model Y which offers a Long Range rear-wheel drive capability.

Tesla's Additional Charges for EVs

While getting a Tesla and paying for what the website quotes is the entire deal for the electric vehicle, there are other charges present that will add to the car's price, including customization options, and more.

However, one of the most popular add-ons for Tesla EVs is the optional full-self-driving (FSD) software that recently reduced its price to $8,000 instead of the $12,000 original price.

There is also a new subscription from Tesla regarding an Unlimited Overnight Charging program at home, and through this, users would not incur additional expenses despite leaving their car hooked up as they sleep.

Tesla owners who have Powerwalls would have to pay an additional $30 per month to get this charging perk, with the company making sure that overnight charging will not get costly.

It is known that buying a car is costly, and right out of the dealership or upon shipping, it is already a cost for users as its value depreciates, along with the expected regular maintenance to keep it in a pristine condition.

However, Tesla's new additional charge promises better performance for the EV, especially with as much as 40 to 60 miles of range for its unlockable power on Standard Range RWD Model Ys, soon to be offered to owners.
