In a recent safety communication, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) strongly urged the public to utilize the well-established Heimlich maneuver rather than new anti-choking devices to save choking victims.

The FDA stressed that the safety and effectiveness of over-the-counter anti-choking devices have yet to be established, as they have not been FDA-approved or cleared.

While no serious injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of the use of these devices, the agency expressed concern that their use could potentially delay life-saving action in an emergency.

LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 03: A young student is taught how to do the Heimlich Manoeuvre as she views the equipment displayed by the "Worshipful Company of Nurses" during the City Careers Festival at Guildhall on July 03, 2023 in London, England. Over 5,000 young Londoners visit the Guildhall today to see a range of major companies and institutions including the BBC, Amazon, and Disney at the London Careers Festival.

FDA Suggests Following Established Choking Rescue Protocols

The Heimlich maneuver, a well-known technique, involves applying abdominal thrusts to dislodge the obstructing object in the airway. In contrast, anti-choking devices work by creating a vacuum to clear the airway.

As reported by Medical Xpress, the leading device in this category, LifeVac, claims success through its "Hall of Saves," which displays instances where the device is said to have saved people from choking.

Despite manufacturers' claims, the FDA advises against relying on these devices because choking rescue protocols, including the Heimlich maneuver, have established success rates.

These protocols, approved by reputable organizations such as the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association, have been shown to be highly effective and can be implemented immediately without the use of devices, saving valuable time.

Furthermore, the FDA expresses concern about the risks associated with using unauthorized anti-choking devices.

As previously mentioned, there have been no reports of serious injuries or deaths, but minor issues like bruising and scratches have been documented.

The FDA also notes that anti-choking devices usually require assembly and may cause delays in implementing established rescue protocols.

FDA Advises Against Anti-Choking Devices

Healthcare providers are urged to educate patients on how to properly implement choking rescue protocols, as well as the potential risks of using unauthorized devices.

According to the safety communications, the FDA works closely with manufacturers to ensure compliance with medical device requirements, emphasizing the critical importance of safety and effectiveness in these life-saving devices.

While recognizing that anti-choking devices may already be present in households, the FDA advises against relying on them as the primary intervention during choking emergencies. Instead, the agency encourages the public to familiarize themselves with established rescue protocols and to seek immediate medical attention if necessary.
