As the much-anticipated total solar eclipse approaches on April 8, many photography enthusiasts are gearing up to capture this rare celestial event. For those planning to use their Google Pixel camera for imaging the eclipse, Google has offered some handy recommendations to ensure stunning photographs.

Solar Eclipse Visible Across Swath Of U.S.
CASPER, WY - AUGUST 21: A near total eclipse is seen from South Mike Sedar Park on August 21, 2017 in Casper, Wyoming. Millions of people have flocked to areas of the U.S. that are in the "path of totality" in order to experience a total solar eclipse. During the event, the moon will pass in between the sun and the Earth, appearing to block the sun.

1. Prepare a Packing List for the Eclipse Excursion

Google's advice comes from Michael Specht, a Pixel Camera product manager, who shared his expertise on capturing the eclipse with Pixel phones. Specht, an image quality expert with a passion for photography, provided valuable insights for both amateur and experienced photographers.

To begin with, Specht suggests preparing a packing list for the eclipse excursion. Essential items include a camera, preferably the Pixel 8 Pro for its camera quality and telephoto lens. Additionally, photographers should pack chargers, spare battery packs, and solar filters to safely view and photograph the sun before and during totality.

2. Explore the Pixel Camera's Features and Settings

Practice is key, according to Specht. He emphasizes the importance of familiarizing oneself with the Pixel camera's features and settings before the eclipse day.

Experimenting with different camera settings, such as ISO, exposure time, and focus, allows photographers to understand how their Pixel camera performs in various lighting conditions. For optimal focus, photographers can tap where different elements meet within the frame, ensuring a sharp image of the sun.

3. Get Rid of the Camera Shake!

During the eclipse, minimizing camera shake is essential for capturing clear photos. While a tripod is recommended for stability, photographers can also use features like the timer function or Pixel Watch remote control to reduce movement.

The Pixel camera's automatic capabilities, including auto-brightness adjustment and Night Sight mode, can simplify the photography process, especially as lighting conditions change during the eclipse.

4. Astrophotography Mode is a No Go

For photographers who prefer manual control, Specht advises against using the astrophotography mode during the total eclipse, as exposure times may exceed the duration of totality. Instead, photographers can experiment with different compositions using the Pixel camera's grid tool, adhering to the "rule of thirds" for visually pleasing images.

5. Use the Best Take Feature

In addition to photographing the eclipse itself, photographers can capture memorable moments with friends and family using Google Photos' Best Take feature. This feature allows users to select the best shots from a series of photos, adding a creative twist to eclipse photography, according to Google.
