Samsung is reportedly vying to have its voice assistant Bixby be generative artificial intelligence-powered, as claimed by a top executive of the company.

A move to refine Samsung's Bixby and potentially hold the same capabilities as other top chatbots like ChatGPT.

With the advent of generative AI and large language model technology, Won-Joon Choi, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile division, stated that he felt the company needed to redefine Bixby's role for it to be capable of generative AI in the future and become smarter.

Choi stated that Samsung is "working so hard" to create generative AI features for Bixby, but they did not provide a timeframe for when they may be available.

Currently, Bixby can only launch Samsung's Galaxy AI tools hands-free for users, not entirely supporting AI itself but rather as a way to launch Samsung's other AI tools.

In 2017, Bixby made its debut alongside the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone. Among the features provided by the software were restaurant recommendations and real-time translations.

However, voice assistants have generally relied on users asking queries and receiving answers rather than being more conversational.

Samsung's AI Push

Samsung, like many other smartphone manufacturers, wants to incorporate more sophisticated AI technologies into their products.

The business unveiled its newest S24 line of smartphones and additional Galaxy AI features. One feature that allows users to look for something on Google without having to switch apps is the ability to circle things on their displays.

Samsung is concentrating on this technology at a time when investors are closely examining what generative AI will bring from Apple.

At its yearly developers' conference, WWDC, scheduled for June, Apple is likely to highlight AI technologies across several of its devices.

Samsung's AI Chip

Samsung's push for Bixby AI coincides with reports that the industry leader in smartphones plans to introduce its own artificial intelligence chip, called Mach-1, in the first half of 2025.

An AI processor that might serve as Samsung's attempt to take on the recently revealed "B200" chip from NVIDIA, which is scheduled for release later this year.

The new chip will be put into production by the end of the year and launched in early 2025. It is anticipated to target edge applications with low power consumption requirements.

The statement was delivered during the corporation's 55th regular shareholders' meeting. According to Samsung Semiconductor CEO Kye Hyun Kyung, the SoC was almost finished, and the chip design had successfully undergone technological validation on FPGAs.

Samsung's Bixby AI push also comes after reports found that a beta version of Microsoft's Copilot AI companion has been made the default assistant on Android handsets in its recent beta version. This beta version of Copilot replaced the default and existing systems, such as Samsung Bixby and Google Assistant, as well as the onboard technology of other operating systems.
