Bruno Cassaro de Andrade, a chemical engineering student, works with a test during the method of separating specific proteins to be applied in the production of vaccines on March 24, 2020, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Health professionals from UniRio and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) worked together to make critical research possible.

The Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ) funded the new health study.

Aside from FAPERJ, the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Coordination for Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) also assisted them financially.

Cause of Post-COVID-19 Syndrome Memory Loss

According to News Medical Life Sciences, the new study suggested that the novel coronavirus spike protein causes memory loss in post-COVID-19 syndrome.

A glass sculpture entitled "coronavirus COVID-19" created by British artist Luke Jerram is seen at his studio in Bristol, southwest of England, on March 17, 2020. - Jerram has created a coronavirus COVID-19 glass sculpture in tribute to the huge global scientific and medical effort to combat the pandemic. Made in glass, 23cm in diameter, it is 1 million times larger than the virus.

Aside from the spike protein, involved health researchers also discovered that the TLR4 receptor could be a therapeutic target for the symptoms.

Their experiments were conducted with mice. Based on the results they acquired when the TRL4 receptor is activated could lead to the elimination of synaptic proteins.

This happens because of the process called phagocytosis. Health researchers discovered that genes related to TLR4 have a higher risk of developing memory impairments, such as memory loss.

About Post-COVID-19 Syndrome

The World Health Organization explained that the post-COVID-19 syndrome (aka COVID) is the long-term symptom experienced by people who recovered from the virus.

Among the most common symptoms linked to COVID include the following:

  • fatigue
  • loss of smell or taste
  • depression or anxiety
  • fever
  • chest pain
  • trouble speaking
  • muscle aches
  • shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • concentration, or sleep problems
  • persistent cough

You can see that memory loss is omitted if you check the symptoms above. This is because memory impairments are rare in the post-COVID-19 syndrome.

If people develop these post-COVID-19 symptoms, their daily activities will likely be affected.
