Game director Eric Williams expresses interest in Konami's Castlevania as their next big game.
Santa Monica Studio's God of War Ragnarok has received widespread critical acclaim since its release on Nov. 9, living up to the hype and even exceeding fans' expectations, according to GameRant. The studio has been around since 2001, releasing popular game franchises such as God of War, Twisted Metal, PixelJunk, and more.
Now, it looks like following the success of their latest game, Williams may have his eye on taking a shot at the classic Castlevania franchise by game studio Konami.
'God of War Ragnarok' Director Wants to Create a 'Castlevania' Game
In a recent interview on Kinda Funny Games, Game Director Eric Williams joined the Gamescast review crew to answer all their God of War-related questions.
When asked about any plans for God of War Ragnarok additional content in the near future, Williams clarified that the idea was not in their books. However, he did mention their new target from a different game franchise.
"I don't know what I'm doing next, but if somebody gives me that Castlevania license, we'd love to make that," Williams told the Gamecast review crew. "You guys can make it happen because you have the audience of the world here. I don't know what I'm doing next, but if somebody gives me that Castlevania license, we would love to make that.
Williams has worked with Santa Monica Studio throughout a big part of his career in the video game industry. In a past interview with the LA Times, he even admitted that he had previously turned down offers from other companies because he did not mind being known as the "God of War guy." However, after succeeding with God of War: Ragnarok, Xfire reports that perhaps the idea of Williams approaching Konami studio to license Castlevania for Sony may be a likely possibility.
The Potential of Konami's Castlevania Franchise
The horror action-adventure video game series, Castlevania, dates back to as early as 1986, with nearly 40 gaming titles as of writing.
However, the most recent mainstream Castlevania game was released way back in 2014 with Lords of Shadow 2. A Netflix animated series for the game franchise was released in 2017, however, so perhaps there is still hope for a reboot of the game amidst its growing fanbase.
According to Gamespot, Konami has recently demonstrated a readiness to develop new games rather than licensing its intellectual property for gambling. This was evident during the company's extensive Silent Hill event earlier this year when they unveiled a number of brand-new initiatives, including the long-rumored remake of Silent Hill 2.
However, Konami continues to license the creation of these projects to other companies, so it may be possible that Sony will eventually acquire the Castlevania license. Additionally, fans should still take Santa Monica's next potential move with Castlevania with a grain of salt since the studio revealed that they are currently working on several different projects.
Regardless, Sony taking on Castlevania would prove to be interesting if they give the infamous Alucard and descendants of the Belmont family a whole new look, different from its 8-bit predecessors.
