A recent survey of UK gamers reveals that more and more people are deserting gaming as a hobby because of inflating energy costs. This trend follows the cost of the living crisis currently hitting Great Britain.
Metro.co.uk first reported that many UK gamers are considering giving up their pastime in response to energy bills that are predicted to increase. The article follows a survey by Carbon Cutting Consoles, an organization that seeks to know the effects of gaming on the environment.
Some UK Gamers Are Willing to Give Up Gaming Due to Soaring Energy Costs
This survey by the cause group revealed a string of interesting statistics. According to the survey by Carbon Cutting Consoles, out of 2,000 gamers that were asked whether their gaming habits would be affected by rising energy prices, 9 percent of the said population admitted that they would cut gaming as a hobby to cut costs.

Furthermore, 21 percent of the survey population opted to reduce their gaming habit to shorter periods. Fifteen percent of the surveyed UK gamers decided to quit gaming altogether to save space for other needs like groceries and other bills.
Despite the glaring reality that the rising cost of living poses for these gamers, 46% percent of them still affirmed that they would continue with their gaming. The majority of these gamers who opted to bear the energy costs associated with PC and console gaming mentioned that video games had become a regular part of their lives.
Some reasoned that gaming had been an important factor in keeping their mental health in good condition. A number of them told the survey that gaming is a great form of stress relief and allows them to hang out virtually with friends from whom the pandemic kept distant.
Metro reveals in their report that even though 64% said they were uninformed of the financial consequences associated with gaming, 53% stated they would be more than willing to cut back on their gaming if it meant saving money on energy bills.
Smarter Business tells us that it will cost a person 10 UK pounds a day to run a laptop for eight hours. To put this into perspective, a gaming PC or an Xbox consumes more electricity than a laptop, and this data is from 2019. Energy costs have been on a slow hike way before that year.
Gamers Globally Are Cutting Back on Gaming Due to Several Factors
A report from Gamenguide tells us that US gamers will be spending significantly less on video games in 2022. This particular phenomenon in the US gaming industry is mainly triggered by high inflation rates and a shortage of chips and components.
Midway through 2022, many gaming companies have also announced a noticeable decline in sales because of a shortage of semiconductors and new titles. Gaming giants Nintendo and Microsoft were hit by the sudden plunge in sales.
