Landing on YouTube, a new trailer featuring the likes of Terrible Toybox and Lucasfilm Games proves the aptly-named Return to Monkey Island a reality following Ron Gilbert's April Fools announcement. The creator last spoke of his beloved classic in a 2013 blog post. He promised the fated return of Monkey Island would be publicized on Apr. 1, should it ever materialize.

Now, it seems the delightful adventures of Guybrush Threepwood, played by returning voice actor Dominic Armato, are set to be continued following the events of the series' previous two games, the 1990s The Secret of Monkey Island and 1991's Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. With a total of five beloved point-and-click adventure experiences, the Monkey Island games have long maintained ample standing in the industry writ large for its poignant comedic escapades.

As it is obvious, series creator Ron Gilbert is back in the saddle alongside his Terrible Toybox, as is Dave Grossman, the original writer and programmer on the two aforementioned games. Grossman will act as co-writer, with Gilbert taking the helm. Other series returnees include almost all of its previous composers, specifically Peter McConnel, Michael Land, Clint Bajakian, and Armato as the voice of the titular Threepwood.

The Disney-owned Lucasfilm Games and Devolver Digital will collaborate in tandem with Terrible Toybox on the Return to Monkey Island. Previously LucasArts, Lucasfilm Games has a long history with the series, dating back to its very origins and on to its fourth installment.

Telltale Games, which aided in the series' fifth installment, will not be involved in the project. LittleBigPlanet designer Rex Crowle will also be working on Return to Monkey Island as its art director, proving it will certainly be stylish in its approach.

Gilbert's Terrible Toybox last released the point-and-click adventure game Thimbleweed Park, which netted the developer a host of accolades, including "Best Ending," "Best Comedy Game," "Best Story," and many more amongst a variety of different publications. The Monkey Island series itself hasn't been privy to an official release since 2009's Tales of Monkey Island. Thus, it being overdue would be an understatement.

There is little in the way of additional information besides its highly exciting 2022 release date. Keep informed via Return to Monkey Island's own website.
