The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 hasn't even finished production yet, and it's already involved in a major car crash in California.

A group of car enthusiasts called "Wrecked_Musclecars" posted an image on Instagram showing a wrecked Corvette on a roadside. The mid-engine sports car was reportedly being driven down a highway near Yosemite National Park when it collided with an oncoming SUV at a corner.

Corvette C8 Crash

Photographs of the scene show that the Corvette C8 sustained significant front-end damage, with much of its bodywork and headlight having been smashed to bits. The front wheel at the driver's side was also completely knocked off the vehicle.

The incident was also posted on the Corvette Forum, where one commenter claimed that the Chevy sports car was part of a convoy that was making its way to the park.

"According to witnesses, the Corvette C8 took the wheel off an SUV heading in the opposite direction around a turn," forum user Corvette_Nut wrote.

"This particular C8 was part of the Corvette Caravan heading up to Yosemite ..."

There's no news yet regarding the driver of the wrecked Corvette C8 or if anyone was hurt in the accident.

Car news website The Drive noted that the impact of the crash was strong enough to have the Corvette's Bowtie's airbags to be deployed. Both occupant-facing airbags were activated, which suggests that there may have been another passenger in the vehicle.

C8 Accident At Virginia International Raceway

This is not the first time that the Chevrolet Corvette C8 may have been involved in an accident before its release. A Corvette Forum member claimed that a model of the mid-engine sports car may have also crashed at Virginia International Raceway in March.

The poster said GM had rented out the track to test one of its development cars. A source familiar with the matter supposedly confirmed that the test car was indeed a Corvette C8.

A piece of the wrecked car was later retrieved by someone at the Virginia raceway. The camouflage pattern found on the debris was said to match the wrap often used on C8 test cars previously seen.

Other commenters shared their theories regarding the crash. One user said the accident may have been triggered by the vehicle's traction management system or lack thereof.

However, no details about the earlier car crash were released likely because Chevrolet had yet to debut the new Corvette model at the time. A GM spokesperson declined to comment on the incident, telling The Drive that the company could not speak on upcoming product offerings.
