Pandora Spruces Up Mobile Apps, Gets a Bit More Personal

Pandora is revamping its mobile app in an attempt to give users a more custom, personalized experience.

The new app includes a completely redesigned user interface, offering a fresh look that will lay the foundation for future updates of the app.

"The design of this latest update is part of our ongoing dedication to innovate the UX and UI across platforms, and as a result, provide effortless music discovery and listening for more than 75 million listeners each month," said the company in a blog post.

The app now includes a Personalization icon, which will give users a better view of their stations, helping them be able to return to previously heard songs and better personalize what the app plays.

Users will also be able to rely on Pandora to give them more information about music. The app allows users to simply tap on a song name or artist name to learn more about them. The company has also added a number of animations and transitions that greatly increase the visual appeal and the navigation of the app.

"We've added a number of subtle new transitions and animations that let us communicate to our listeners in a clear, simple, intuitive way," continued the blog post. "By flying the visual indication of the station and the station name out from the station list into the Now Playing screen, we're building the Now Playing screen, building the station, and driving a sense of place into the listening experience."

Pandora is currently the largest music streaming service in the world, with over 76 million active listeners. One of the largest and fastest growing markets is in mobile, making the Pandora mobile app extremely important for the company to focus on. The app has not been updated this drastically in over two years.

"This redesign allowed us to reflect and evolve on the core spirit of Pandora," said Tony Calzaretta, vice president of design and creative at Pandora in a statement. "With this update, our team arrived at design solutions that exist at the intersection of instinctually and analytically driven insights. We did this with an emphasis on simplicity and clarity, so that we can maximize the listener's ability to personalize their stations and fit their desired Pandora experience."

Despite being as large as it is, Pandora is facing increased competition from the likes of Spotify, which now has 40 million active monthly listeners, including 10 million paying subscribers.
