Meet Sharp's Corner R Concept: A Smartphone With Curved-Edge Display, Tiny Bezel

Sharp has unveiled a new handset concept that pushes the boundaries into the future, and a curved-edge full bezel-less display is sure to leave many in awe.

The Japan-based company makes a variety of electronic products, some of which are already fairly known to global consumers. They include TVs, smartphone displays and smartphones.

One of the most commended products of the company is the IGZO mobile panel, which are among the best in the industry. Sharp also treaded on the path of "bezel-less" smartphones before, with handsets that come with innovative and memorable designs, such as the Sharp Aquos Crystal and Sharp Aquos XX.

Despite the first reactions to its smartphones being more than promising, Sharp did not exactly make it easy for clients to get its devices outside of Japan.

Earlier this year, Apple partnered Foxconn bought Sharp for $6.2 billion and it looks like the enterprise is building a new and eye-catching smartphone.

The concept of the latest Sharp handset is quite stunning, as it features design that only holsters bezel on the lower side of the device. On the bottom bezel, potential customers will get three virtual buttons, one of which could work as a fingerprint sensor. Dubbed Sharp Corner R, the neat gadget looks a bit like a pebble because of its elegantly rounded edges.

The front of the phone features the company's IGZO display, which sports the aforementioned slightly curved sides. The screen is a 5.2-inch panel able to sport resolutions of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, counting as much as 425 ppi. To put it in perspective, keep in mind that the Galaxy Note 7's display features 518 ppi. Take note that the screen-to-body ratio of Sharp's Corner R is 90 percent, which is more than anything on the market.

Sharp showcased the concept smartphone during the CEATECH 2016 technology expo in Japan, but avoided sharing the entire sheet of technical specs.

What is more, the venture keeps mum on the availability or price for the upcoming bezel-less device.

Seeing how the smartphone design pool is beginning to shrink (cough, iPhone 7, cough), novel approaches such as Sharp's Corner R are a great way to bring new blood to the family. Another thing to look forward to is increased availability for the device outside its home market of Japan.
