Talk about human ingenuity, and hitting two birds in one stone. The Hamster Wheel Standing Desk is all that.

This one-of-a-kind desk is a new invention that keeps one productive and fit at the workplace at the same time.

“Numerous esteemed experts agree that standing is better than sitting and that walking is better than standing,” Robb Godshaw, one of the creators of the desk, writes in his post at Instructables website.

Yet he adds that the workplace only offers “inhumane chairs and stagnant standing desks for you to use while you struggle to get through a workday full of distractions and bodily pains.”

Godshaw, who is an artist-in-residence at Autodesk’s Pier 9 in San Francisco, collaborated with Will Doenlen, a developer at Instructables.

Instructables, meanwhile, is a place where people can share their creations to the public.

Godshaw and Doenlen, with much help from a few friends, completed the pioneering project in 24 hours.

The Autodesk Inventor platform made it possible for what they called as a parametric design for the wheel, allowing the width, diameter and slats number to be easily altered.

They went to develop a wheel that is 80" in diameter to be supported by a 24" wide base containing one set of four skateboard wheels where its wheel would rest. Such style makes way for a fluid rotation with no need for any axle for its wheel.

Since a standing desk fitting through a wheel is no longer a problem, they say it was merely a matter of evading circumference and leaving plenty of space for a human desk user.

They then brought a human model from the GrabCad to look at clearances. They also measured all doors at Pier 9 to guarantee that it could be taken out of the building.

The inventors say it took them lots of meticulous consideration because safety and ergonomics are extremely essential to any kind of furniture project.

One may notice the lack of brakes in the image of the desk because it would defeat its real purpose, that is to truly push the idea of productivity to the desk user, according to the creators.

The inventors shared on the Instructables website the steps on how the public can make the Hamster Wheel Standing Desk, as well as the materials needed for the project such as 240 wood screws, four skate wheels, four sheets of ¾" Plywood, two pipes, a pint of glue, plus of course a really good attitude.
