The 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game from Konami is as classic as they come. Featuring four-player co-op and some great side-scrolling arcade action, it's still one of the best TMNT games to have ever been made.
That makes it a perfect fit for NECA's retro video game-inspired line of collectible figures, and the company has just revealed not one but two box sets over which fans will likely be drooling. The first is a box including all four turtles looking almost identical to their appearance in the game, pixels and all. The second box set includes many of the enemies the Turtles (and players) faced off against in the classic arcade game, including Foot Clan ninjas and the evil Shredder himself.
Calling these box sets cool would be an understatement, but it's not just the figures themselves that will make every TMNT fan squeal with glee. The boxes for each set perfectly recreate the game's character select screen and even includes a fold-down piece that mimics an actual arcade cabinet. Fake buttons, joysticks and even a "how to play" are all featured on the fold-down cover, making this one collectible box set that you wouldn't dream of removing from the box. It's less a box and more a beautiful display case.
Even the trailer for the figures brings back memories. Check it out below.
These box sets are some seriously cool collectibles for TMNT superfans, but unfortunately, it appears that the sets are exclusive to this year's San Diego Comic-Con for the time being. No pricing details have been announced thus far, though NECA says more information will be announced soon regarding preorders for those who will be in attendance at the show.
Here's hoping that the figures won't remain Comic-Con exclusives for long. There are likely far more than a few TMNT fans and gamers who would love to pick up these box sets, given the chance. Make it happen, NECA! We could always use some more turtle power in our lives.
