This is not the first time that Pornhub has used pornography to champion philanthropic efforts. And it probably won't be the last.
For its first project in 2016, Pornhub pledges a one-cent donation to saving the whale through the Moclips Cetological Society, a non-profit organization, for every 2,000 videos streamed from its website from Feb. 8 to 29. The project is in honor of World Whale Day, which is celebrated every Feb. 13.
Pornhub's Vice President, Corey Price, explains that the "Save the Whale" effort is a new way for the company to support causes that don't usually garner much attention.
Moclips is focused on gaining more knowledge to save the species and not just fighting to free Willy.
"This initiative allows us to demonstrate our sincerity and integrity when it comes to helping out one of the planet's most sacred populations of creatures," he said. Of course, it is not only the sperm whales and humpback whales they care about but the entire species.
A one-cent pledge for every 2,000 videos streamed may seem insignificant for some but one should never underestimate the power of porn.
In less than a day since the project launched, the Pornhub counter already shot up to more than 5 million views, which translates into more than $2,000 worth of donation.
Pornhub is hoping it can donate somewhere between $20,000 and $30,000 but, with the way things are going, it is entirely possible for the community to rise up to the challenge and get the total donation to reach about $50,000, which will really be a huge load of help for the non-profit.
The Moclips Cetological Society is based in Washington D.C. founded by Ken Balcomb in 1969 and its focus is on saving whales, dolphins and porpoises through knowledge and conservation.
"My urgent comment with regards to [cetaceans] is that we humans are arrogantly disrupting and destroying their lives in ways that most of us cannot even comprehend. We are making their home unbearable, and in some cases unsurvivable, while we go about our lives and our wars on land and sea as if that doesn't matter at all," Balcomb wrote in his blog.
There are still a lot of days for Pornhub and its community of viewers to help get the majestic swimmers out of a sticky situation.
