Doom co-creator John Romero begins work on new FPS game

John Romero, the founder of id Software and one of the creators behind video game classics such as Doom and Wolfenstein 3D, is apparently working on another first person shooter.

Romero has continued to be involved in the video game industry. However, he has not been involved in the creation of a video game in the shooter genre ever since the release of the much-maligned Daikatana in 2000.

Originally released for the PC, Daikatana was supposed to revolutionize the first person shooter genre, with the combination of role-playing elements of puzzle solving and action along with an extensive sidekick system. The video game features the adventures of Hiro Miyamoto, who is on a quest to retrieve the Daikatana, a legendary sword.

However, Daikatana was met with bad reviews from critics for lackluster gameplay and a long list of bugs in its first release. The video game was delayed several times in development, which resulted in more technologically advanced games to have already been released to the market when Daikatana was finally released.

The Nintendo 64 version of Daikatana was first shipped as a rental-only game in Blockbuster stores, before finally being put up for sale on retailers months later. However, rushed development on this version of the video game resulted in many downgrades from the PC version, while also retaining the earlier version's many flaws.

It seems that Romero is ready to leave all of Daikatana's failures behind.

"I haven't made a shooter since 2000. So I'm basically starting to work on another one," said Romero in a recently concluded episode of the Super Joystiq Podcast.

Romero added that he has started working on the project with a concept artist to form the foundations of the new first person shooter, with Romero also saying that he already had "some cool imagery" in mind for the video game's protagonist.

Aside from the few details that Romero shared about the project, there are no other additional details known about the first person shooter, aside from the fact that the video game will be developed by Romero Games and not by a mobile gaming studio.

Romero, along with his wife Linda, have been developing social games through their studio, Loot Drop. One of Romero's recently successful video games was Ravenwood Fair, a free-to-play title.

Romero's return to the first person shooter genre will have gamers excited to see if the new video game will mirror the classic status of Doom, or fall in failure like Daikatana.

Doom is preparing for a comeback on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with Doom 4, as the video game classic returns to its roots while keeping the gore that has been the trademark of the Doom series. No release estimates have so far been revealed.
