Motorola Moto G2 (XT1063) pops up on GFXBench with 5-inch 720p display and 8-megapixel camera

The Motorola Moto G2 has made an appearance on GFXBench, revealing the smartphone's specs. The handset will boast a 5-inch 720p display, quad-core processor, and 8-megapixel camera.

While Apple, Samsung, LG and HTC are battling it out in the high-end smartphone market, Motorola has set its sight on the mid-range and prepaid market. The company put this plan into motion when it unveiled the Moto G in November 2013. The smartphone came stocked with impressive features like a 4.5-inch 720p display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and a 5-megapixel rear camera that had built-in support to record HD video @30fps. It also borrowed some design inspiration from Motorola's flagship Moto X by allowing users to customize the look of the device through the use of snap on rear cases in different colors and textures.

The Moto G's most impressive feature was its price. Motorola sold the smartphone unlocked with a starting price of $179 and the handset eventually made its way to the prepaid market when it landed on Verizon Wireless in January for $99. In February, Motorola announced that the Moto G was the company's most successful and highest-selling smartphone in the company's history.

If there was one complaint about the smartphone, it was that it lacked 4G LTE connectivity. Motorola heard the complaints and announced the Moto G 4G LTE in May. Motorola began selling the Moto G 4G LTE in June and priced the unlocked smartphone at a very attractive $219.

News of the Moto G's successor leaked in July, along with an image of the smartphone in tow. The Moto G2 has just popped up again and this time the handset has made an appearance on the popular benchmarking site GFXBench. The smartphone is listed as Motorola XT1063 and it's running Android 4.4.4 KitKat. The Moto G2 features a 5-inch 1280 x 720 display, which is a bump up from the Moto G's 4.5-inch 720p display. It has also received an upgrade in the camera department, moving from a 5-megapixel shooter to an 8-megapixel rear camera.

According to the GFXBench listing, the Moto G2 will retain the same 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, Adreno 305 GPU (graphics processing unit), 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage found in the original Moto G.

There's no word on when Motorola plans on officially announcing the Moto G2 but once we hear something you can be rest assured we'll pass the news on.
