Evernote To Focus On Improving Core Experience By Ditching Skitch For Windows, Android, And iOS

Skitch for Windows, Android and iOS is ending on Jan. 22, reveals Evernote in a blog post.

After the said date, the company will no longer support the app and keep it updated. Users will no longer be able to download the app which is bound to eventually stop working in the future.

In addition to that, Evernote also decided to put a life sentence to its Clearly browser extension which launched in 2011 for distraction-free reading. Likewise, the company said that its core app for Pebble will also be removed on Jan. 22.

"As part of our promise to focus on improving the core Evernote experience, we are ending support for several of these standalone apps: Skitch for Windows, Windows Touch, iOS, Android; Evernote Clearly; Evernote for Pebble," wrote Evernote in a blog post.

Skitch, which was acquired by Evernote back in 2011, now has more than 16 million users. It is described in iTunes as an app that helps people "visually share their thoughts with others."

"See something that sparks an idea?," said iTunes. "Use Skitch to snap it, mark it up with simple tools, and send it on in an instant. Your bold ideas stand out even brighter with Skitch."

The company said that the decision to discontinue the app versions is very straightforward. Users can find almost identical functionality on the main Evernote app. They also made mention that the article simplification features that users loved from Clearly are also accessible in Web Clipper. Lastly, Pebble watch users can access the Powernoter app instead since it will have identical Evernote features.

Several fans immediately showed their disappointment with the company's announcement.

"This is insane," said Dan in a comment to the blog post. "Dropping Skitch for Windows is a slap in the face to a massive chunk of your user base. I can't believe you are also dropping Evernote for Pebble."

"I too am disappointed," said a user known as Shawn. "I use Skitch for Windows to capture screen images, point to problem areas, and send the image in an email off to a developer. It's a workflow that works really well and doesn't involve Evernote at all."

It seemed like Evernote's decision is simply based on its desire to simplify things. Those products which the company believes have become unnecessary are eventually dropped as it intensifies focus on its core app.

Evernote will continue to offer and support Skitch to Mac users. There is no information why Mac is not included in the move.
