Jaguar Land Rover develops self-learning, intelligent car

The new Land Rover features a new suite of technologies that will allow it to fulfill secondary tasks, making the driver focus more on the road. It's smart enough to recognize different people behind the wheels and personal driving preferences. It even acts like a personal secretary which can review the driver's diary and can even send reminders or alerts.

The whole system of monitoring relies on a complicated software which enables the car to study, predict, check, and remind the car's occupants. The point is to help the driver auto-delegate his tasks and make him concentrate more on his driving.

The British automaker is also investing heavily on a new range of fuel-efficient engines while maintaining 500+ horsepower supercharged V8s. The result is the new compact, lightweight and low-emitting modular engines dubbed as Ingenium.

Dr Wolfgang Epple, Jaguar Land Rover's Director of Research and Technology, said, "Up until now most self-learning car research has only focused on traffic or navigation prediction. We want to take this a significant step further and our new learning algorithm means information learnt about you will deliver a completely personalized driving experience and enhance driving pleasure."

The most prominent feature is the Smart Assistant which understands the driver's preferences and can even predict these preferences. As soon as the driver opens the door, the Smart Assistant recognizes his smartphone and makes adjustments inside the car such as the car seat, steering wheel, mirrors, and in-car climate with an additional account of outside weather condition.

Dr Epple further added that the car's self-learning technology is aimed "to minimize driver distraction, which will help reduce the risk of accidents. Presenting the driver with information just at the right time whilst driving will reduce both cognitive distraction and the need for the driver to look away from the road to scroll through phone lists, or adjusts mirrors, temperature or seat functions while on the road."

To further aid the driver in keeping his eyes on the road, the Jaguar Land Rover will feature a "Virtual windscreen." It uses fully the car's windscreen and turns it into an instant display window to get the driver's complete attention. It acts as the driver's guide when it comes to stepping on the brakes, race-like driving, and tracking lap times. The windscreen is said to be built with an innovative gesture control program that would make any car with conventional dashboard feel awkwardly shy.
